What your Job Match Score is really telling you (and how to move it)

When you see "72% match", the natural reaction is binary: good enough or not good enough. Both reactions waste the information.

A match score is not a verdict. It is a diagnostic. The overall number is the least interesting part — the value lives in the breakdown.

The dimensions that move, and the ones that don't

Experience and education move slowly — you cannot add three years of seniority by Friday. Technical skills move at medium speed: a missing tool can be credibly learned in weeks if the role hinges on it. But two dimensions move fast: interview readiness and company knowledge.

This is where most candidates misallocate their effort. They agonize over the 20% they cannot change and ignore the 30% they could lift in a week of focused practice.

Read "what's preventing you from being a 95% match" as a to-do list

A good gap analysis is not a list of your flaws — it is a ranked plan. "Missing: dbt" is actionable. "Weaker: structuring behavioral answers" is actionable. If your gap list doesn't read like a to-do list, the analysis isn't deep enough.

The compounding effect

Each mock interview against the real role moves your readiness dimension. Each skill you close moves the technical dimension. The overall score is just the sum of focused reps — and watching it climb is the most honest progress signal in a job search.
